In years past, if the NFC West had a late-season primetime showcase type of game, it would be a huge waste. However, that’s not the case this year, and in this weekend’s Sunday night game of the week, the San Francisco 49ers travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks in what is an extremely intriguing game with a ton at stake. So what should we expect between the 49ers and Seahawks in week 16 of the NFL season? Read on for our preview and the Sunday night NFL predictions & odds to follow.
The 49ers are coming off a huge victory in what was one of the best games of the entire season. Off to an astonishing 31-3 lead on the road against the New England Patriots, they managed to allow them back into the game, eventually being tied at 31-31. Instead of crumbling though, they hung in there to win the game despite the huge blown lead. It was an emotional roller coaster of a game for them, and still a great win to go into New England and pick up the W.
They’re now 10-3-1 in the division, and they have a playoff berth guaranteed, but the division isn’t quite locked up yet. They’d need to defeat the Seahawks here in order to clinch the division title.
The Seattle Seahawks meanwhile have just become the first team to put up 50 or more points in back to back games in more than half a century, which is astonishing. Perhaps no team is hotter than they are right now, with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson playing exceptional, running back Marshawn Lynch in full “beast mode” and the play-making defense excelling. At 9-5, a win here puts them in position to potentially capture the division title in the final weekend of the season, although that tie that the 49ers have makes things more difficult for them.
Seattle has one of the best home field advantages in the league, which should benefit them in this game against a division rival, in a very big showdown. That home field would also benefit them greatly in the postseason, and they’d need that division title in order to host a game in the playoffs. Adding even more intrigue to the showdown is the latest Pete Carroll-Jim Harbaugh meeting, which is always fun as well.
Now, onto the official predictions & odds for the game, and the 49ers are slim 1 point road favorites over the Seattle Seahawks. You could also take San Francisco at -120, or the Seahawks at +100, showing how close this game is projected as being. The over/under has been set at a very low 39 points, 2nd lowest point total of the weekend.
The 49ers have momentum with that big win which they almost blew against the Patriots, but that also must have been exhausting. Not to mention the 6-hour flights back and forth across the country. Going into hostile territory now against Seattle is going to be extremely difficult. Take the Seahawks to win this game and keep the NFC West division title up for grabs heading into the final weekend of the season.
