2010 Super Bowl XLIV Injury Update
2010 Super Bowl XLIV Injury Update
While injury lists are part and parcel of Super Bowl preparation, the Indianapolis Colts have some pretty big ones to overcome before Sunday’s game. The fate of the game could depend on defensive end Dwight Freeney, who has an ankle injury, and whose prospects for starting appear dim. Freeney’s understudy is Raheem Brock, who will be under a lot of pressure to step up if Freeney doesn’t play. With Freeney questionable the oddsmakers still have the Colts -5 favored to win the Super Bowl.
As for the Saints, receiver Robert Meachem insists he will play Sunday, and safety Darren Sharper, who has a knee injury is also expected to get some limited play. Tight end Jeremy Shockey, who also has a knee injury, is reported as healing well and likely to play. Meachem was wearing a protective ankle boot last week, but he is determined to play Sunday.
New Orleans is considered this year’s sentimental favorite, even though Peyton Manning, the Colts’ quarterback, considered one of the best ever, is from New Orleans. Manning has remained gracious, telling the press he understands why the Saints are so well-loved. And Brett Favre, whose loss as a quarterback to the Saints kept him out of this year’s Super Bowl, has spoken warmly of the Saints, telling Saints Coach Sean Payton that if the Vikings didn’t make the Super Bowl, he wanted the Saints to represent the NFC.
One of the biggest reasons the Saints are considered the crowd favorite this year is that they are making their first appearance in the Super Bowl, perhaps symbolic of the rebirth of New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina nearly 5 years ago. But with both conference champions going head to head for the first time in 16 years, the overall feeling is that whoever wins on Sunday will have deserved it. People are betting the Saints who are listed as 5 point Underdogs and the posted total remains at 56.5 points.
