NCAA Basketball Odds – Villanova, Pitt headed for Big East battle

Good luck with Sunday’s US sportsbook odds for a Big East showdown between Villanova and Pitt at “The Pete”, where the Wildcats have struggled as of late. The Panthers are trying to keep pace with the Wildcats, as well as Syracuse and West Virginia, but they may be undermined by a Thursday game on the road.

The No.3 Wildcats (22-3, 11-2) may have been looking ahead to this game, as they were upset 84-75 at home by UConn on Monday. Scottie Reynolds led the way with 18 points, but the Wildcats shot just 40% from the floor, including 7-of-24 from three-point land, and they were outrebounded 36-26 by the Huskies, who were inspired after being embarrassed by Cincinnati, and Villanova couldn’t keep up with their intensity.

The No.17 Panthers (19-6, 8-4) play at Marquette on Thursday night, but before that, they won an epic 98-95 triple-overtime meeting with rival West Virginia at home in the second edition of the “Backyard Brawl”. Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker had 24 points each, while Gilbert Brown was next with 18 points for the Panthers, who shot 9-of-26 from beyond the arc, and they were outrebounded 48-40. This was the first time in 179 meetings that these two bitter rivals went too triple overtime, and the Panthers wanted revenge after a 70-51 loss in Morgantown in which one of their assistant coaches was hit under the eye by a coin. Pitt is now 6-0 against top-five ranked teams at “The Pete”.

The Panthers should be the NCAA basketball betting favorite in this contest, as Villanova has dropped six of their last seven at Pitt, and they’re 0-3 at “The Pete” since it opened in 2002. The Panthers are 14-1 at home, while two of Villanova’s three losses have come on the road, and they have to be prepared for what will surely be a hostile environment. The Wildcats may not come out and say that they were looking past UConn, but the Huskies were slumping and the Wildcats are great at home, and by the time they picked up the pace, it was already too late, so look for them to be focused on Sunday. The Panthers are probably still trying to catch their breath after their classic showdown with West Virginia, and then on Thursday, they face a Marquette team that is certainly no joke. This may be too tall of an order to face against the Wildcats, who will get back on their feet to win their first game at Pitt since 1996.
