Jayson Williams will be spending five years in prison for the 2002 shooting death of Costas Christofi, a limousine driver, which he had hired to drive guests to his estate after a Harlem Globetrotters game.Williams shot the victim as he was handling a shotgun, which was one of many that he had in his possession. The Jayson Williams sentence comes after six years of legal positioning and battles since 2004.
In December, Williams entered into a plea agreement with the attorney general’s office that prosecuted the case. We will be eligible for parole after 18 months. Family members of Chistofi did not seem to be very moved by Williams apology to the family and have stated that they hope that when his parole hearings occur that he will be continually denied. Jayson Williams legal battles are far from over, his $86 million contract from the Nets is essentially nonexistent and he is on the verge of bankruptcy.
In addition to this, he still has a pending case in the state of New York; he is facing a one-year sentence in New York City when he was charged with driving under the influence on January 5. His blood alcohol level was more than double them, what is legally allowed and the District Attorney’s Office wants Williams to serve the one-year sentence after his sentencing New Jersey is complete.
Just to add to his legal troubles, on February 23, Jayson Williams’s wife filed for divorce based on physical and emotional abuse. This former NBA star has gone from celebrity superstar to being led away in handcuffs and facing additional legal difficulties. Once known for a lavish lifestyle, he will now be living the life of a prisoner.
