College Basketball Betting – BYU, New Mexico out for MWC crown

Sports betting players don’t really think about the Mountain West when it comes to March Madness, but there’s an interesting race going on out there, and the winner of the conference could be crowned on Saturday, when BYU hosts New Mexico, who sits in pole position in the MWC.

March Madness Picks

New Mexico vs BYU odds – Saturday, February 27, 4:00 PM ET

The No.10 Lobos (26-3, 12-2) almost got caught looking ahead to the Cougars, but they managed to come away with a 72-66 win at Colorado State, with Dairese Gary leading the way with 23 points, and Roman Martinez added 17 points and 12 boards for the Lobos, who shot just 36.8% from the field.  The Lobos won the rebounding battle by a score of 41-29, including 17-10 on the offensive glass, which helped them overcome 16 turnovers. Darington Hobson had 15 points and 10 boards, and he was 8-of-12 from the foul line.

This will be the end of a big week for the the No.13 Cougars (25-3, 10-2), who face San Diego State on Wednesday, and the Aztecs are also trying to claw their way back into the MWC picture. Last weekend, the Cougars thumped Wyoming 85-63 on the road, getting 22 points each from Jimmer Fredette and Tyler Haws. BYU committed just five turnovers while forcing 12 out of Wyoming, and they were an efficient 20-of-24 from the foul line while outrebounding Wyoming 37-28 and holding them to 40.5% from the field.

US sportsbook odds (US sportsbook reviews) should favor BYU at home, and they had won 20 in a row at the Joyce Center ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with San Diego State. BYU will also be out to avenge a 76-72 loss at New Mexico on January 27th, and Gary again was the star with 25 points, including a nine-point run late in the game. Fredette had 27 points in the first meeting of the year between these two, and he’s looking to be the frontrunner for the MWC Player of the Year award. The Cougars will have to keep the Lobos off the boards, especially Hobson and Martinez, and then they’ll look to push the pace up the floor with Fredette. They’ll need other players to step up because Fredette will get a lot of attention. This could come from Haws, who had just seven points on 3-of-8 shooting. BYU will also look to be more aggressive as New Mexico went to the foul line 13 more times than the Cougars. The race in the Mountain West will be more interesting after BYU’s game with San Diego State, and it may reach a fever pitch after this game.
