Iverson Not Returning to 76ers

Iverson Not Returning to 76ers

Allen Iverson is not returning to the Philadelphia 76ers for the rest of the year. He has not been playing with the team for over a month due to an unspecified illness affecting his four-year-old daughter and has been in Atlanta to be with his family. In a statement from the team, it has been decided that he would not return as he would be a distraction and place an adverse influence on the team while dealing with his family issues. Iverson started the season with Memphis but only played three games before announcing his retirement. He returned to Philadelphia after this brief retirement with minimal results. He did have 6-20 point games but seemed to be hampered by his left knee that is affected by arthritis.

NBA Picks

He is most certainly a fan favorite and even with his nominal performance, he was voted to the Eastern conference All-Star starting team, but he did not attend. His return to the 76ers did not make the impact that they were looking for, and the team currently has a 22-37 record and just lost to Orlando this past Monday. Philadelphia is currently 15 games behind the Boston Celtics and is on a three-game losing streak. The 76ers will be playing Atlanta on Wednesday night. Atlanta is coming off a win over the Chicago Bulls and is currently two games behind the Orlando Magic in the Southeast division.

Iverson’s departure from the 76ers may be an indication that he might be considering permanent retirement. The 34-year-old Iverson has been plagued with the bad left knee and has not been able to return to his same All-Star form of the past. He has not been able to get some of the same game results as when he dominated the NBA as one of the best guards in the game. With Iverson not returning to the 76ers, the team will be looking to find someone to step up to take a leadership position for this team.
