Syracuse No. 1 College Basketball Rankings Picks
The Syracuse No. 1 ranking is the first for them in over 20 years. This team was not even in contention at the start of the season, and it seemed as though they would not even be able to break the top 25. However, after the first two weeks of play with them beating California and North Carolina, Syracuse came in at number 10 in the rankings. Once they cracked the top 10 they have not gone down in the rankings and actually moved up to the number four spot. After this past weekend with the top three teams posting loses, Syracuse was able to take over the number one spot. Syracuse, who has only 2 losses over their last 29 games, moved into first place after it’s 95 to 77 win over 7th ranked Villanova. Coach Jim Boeheim, who has been coaching Syracuse for the past 34 years and has 826 wins, stated that “It’s been a long time and we’re happy to be there”. Kansas, who has been in the top spot for 4 weeks dropped to second after losing to Oklahoma State. Kentucky also lost to Tennessee and that bumped them into the third spot. Texas, the other team that has previously been number one, are out of the top 25 as they have lost seven of their past 12 games after their 17 and 0 start.
Other shifts in the rankings include Duke rising to number four, and Kansas State taking the fifth spot. Ohio State went from number nine to the six spot and Purdue fell to seventh place after their loss to Michigan State. New Mexico is currently in 8th with Villanova and West Virginia number 9 and 10. Syracuse plays St. John’s tonight and will try to win the Big East title in their final home game of the season. It is not anticipated that St. John’s will beat the Orange as they have lost three of their last four games and had a 37.5% shooting average in their loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Syracuse No. 1 ranking has led to speculation that the Orange will be a major contender in the 2010 NCAA March Madness tournament play.
