Eri Yoshida Knuckleballer From Japan
Eri Yoshida From Japan
Eri Yoshida from Japan has idolized Tim Wakefield and his knuckleball for years. This 18 year old is a professional pitcher in Japan and is the first woman from Japan to play for the Chico Outlaws, which are in the Independent Golden Baseball League. She learned how to throw the knuckleball from watching videos of Tim Wakefield, and it has been her dream to actually be able to meet the Boston Red Sox pitcher. She spent some time with Wakefield at the Boston spring training camp in Fort Myers and they discussed the knuckleball. Wakefield gave Yoshida some tips as she watched him throw from the mound.
Yoshida also spent some time with Daisuke Matsuzaka while he began to throw from the mound after returning from injuring his upper back. The Sox will not be using him in their pitching rotation until later in April to make sure Matsuzaka is fully recovered and ready to go. Yesterday also saw Mike Lowell in the batting cages, which is the first time since he had surgery on his right thumb. There has been no comment from Lowell in regard to how the injury is impacting his return. There is some speculation that he may be traded as the Sox have signed Adrian Beltre as a free agent.
Victor Martinez begins his first spring training with the Red Sox. He was obtained by Boston right in the middle of the pennant race and had to deal with a whole new pitching staff. This catcher that was originally a shortstop from Venezuela almost quit when the Cleveland Indians switched him to catcher in their Instructional league. Martinez has made the switch to Boston relatively easy with the help of Jason Varitek, the catcher that Martinez was replacing. They are working hard in spring training together and Martinez is looking forward to a full season with the Red Sox. I’m sure Eri Yoshida From Japan would love for either Red Sox player to catch her.
