Freshman sensation Brittney Griner from Baylor was ejected from the Texas Tech game after she punched Texas’s Jordan Barncastle. This occurred after Barncastle, who had been playing very aggressively throughout the game, had fouled Griner. Barncastle had contact with Griner and had been called for the foul as Griner threw a punch at Barncastle’s face. This all happened during the fourth quarter, as Baylor was winning by 16 points.
This led to a bench clearing incident, where Griner was called with a flagrant technical foul and ejected from the game, as well as another technical call was charged to Baylor player, Morgan Medlock during the incident. The Texas Tech team was also assessed a technical for clearing their bench during the incident. Baylor did go on to beat Texas Tech by a score of 69-60, after the 10 minute delay of the game. Griner will be suspended for one game based on NCAA regulations and may be suspended for the duration of the season as well as tournament play. The decision of further punishment will be determined by Baylor as well as the Big 12. This will be quite a blow to Griner, as she has been nominated for freshman of the year. Baylor Coach Kim Mulkey stated, “There’s no place for that in sports.” She also hinted that additional discipline was forthcoming.
Baylor only has one game left in the regular season as they are looking to get a first round bye. Currently, they are tied with three other teams for that position. As Brittney Griner punched Barncastle, Barncastle then went to the locker room to have her injuries assessed. She did return for her technical free throws and then left for the remainder of the game.
