March Madness Picks: Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez helps Upset Duke

It was fitting that Maryland upset Duke, as it was senior night for Maryland players, Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes and Landon Milbourne. The win over Duke with a score of 79-72, puts them into first place in the ACC standings, tied with the Blue Devils. If they both win this coming Saturday, then they would share the title with Duke. But if they should win and Duke loses they would hold the title all by themselves. The win last night, will ensure that Maryland will get a top position in the NCAA tournament.

Senior guard Vasquez scored 20 points and they had a 14 point lead which was cut to two with Duke switching to a zone defense by the end of the first half. Maryland managed to hold on to the lead, giving them their first win in over seven games. The longtime rivalry between the two teams found the Maryland fans rushing the court. Even though the University had imposed penalties for those that would take part. The March Madness celebration started to brew as Vasquez scored, the much-needed basket with only 37 seconds left in the game. He ends his career at Maryland as one of the top performers in the school’s history. His play of late should increase his draft spot for the NBA.

In other play last night Kansas defeated Kansas State to take the Big 12 title. This may give Kansas a first place seed in the brackets. One of the most important games last night was the battle between Notre Dame and Uconn to determine if one of them would get a tournament spot. Notre Dame won that game 58-50 and now has a chance to be one of the last teams in. Over the next several days we will see many teams vying for those at-large bids for the tournament that makes games such as Notre Dame at Marquette and Connecticut at South Florida must wins for these teams to stay in contention.
