In a scene just like right out of Ocean’s 11, the movie with George Clooney, a Poker Tournament robbery occurred in Germany. Currently, the police are looking for a fifth suspect of the gang that tried to pull off the robbery of the $1 million in prize money. The European Poker Tour was holding its competition on Saturday in Germany and had over 1000 players, which also included Boris Becker, the German tennis star. The robbery was believed to be the undertaking of some amateur robbers and most likely had one person inside the hotel, which acted as the spotter.
The Poker Tournament robbery took place just as the money was being transferred from the main fault. Police believe it is also interesting that several of these security guards just happened to be on lunch break at the time of the robbery. At the exact moment of the transfer, the armed robbers, who had guns and machetes, entered the hotel and created mass chaos. Since the tournament was being broadcast, you were able to watch as players dove underneath tables, as well as trying to run for the exits. One security guard did manage to grab one of the bags of cash from the robber.
The Poker Tournament robbery did not prevent from the championship to be completed. Kevin MacPhee, from the United States, won the title as he defeated Ilari Thakokallio from Finland and took home the $1 million prize. Luckily nobody was seriously injured, although seven people had slight injuries. The final 24 players of the tournament were able to resume four hours after the robbery occurred. Police are still looking for the individuals responsible. There were some discrepancies amongst the players as to chip counts, as well as how to restart the event due to the fact that many of the poker tables had been overturned.
