Derek Anderson Released from Browns

The Cleveland Browns have released quarterback Derek Anderson yesterday. This move has not been unexpected since they picked up Seneca Wallace, the backup quarterback from Seattle. It has been speculated that the Browns will not keep either Anderson or Brady Quinn for the upcoming season. This will save the Browns from having to pay Anderson the $2 million bonus, which would have been due on March 19.

Derek Anderson has been with the Browns for the past four seasons and was named to the Pro bowl in 2007. This was the year that he posted a 10-6 record for the Browns. He has struggled with the team, especially when facing pressure. He started only five games last season after starter Brady Quinn was injured. He lost the starting position back to Quinn after his dismal play.

There may be several teams interested in picking up Derek Anderson. The Arizona Cardinals may need someone to give Matt Leinart some competition as they lost Kurt Warner due to retiring. The Carolina Panthers may need a back up quarterback to give Matt Moore support. Last week, the Panthers released their veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme. There are other teams that may be looking for a quarterback to shake up their rosters as well. The Browns are waiting for Seneca Wallace’s physical before they formally confirm the trade and his agreement. The former safety, Brodney Pool is still looking at St. Louis for a contract, which he did not get on Tuesday after his visit, but is scheduled to talk with the Jets today.
