Marion Jones Goes to WNBA
Marion Jones just signed a contract with the WNBA Tulsa Oklahoma Shock. Jones, who won five medals at the Sydney Australia Olympics, fell from grace after she had admitted in 2007 her use of performance enhancing drugs. She was charged with lying to federal agents and spent six months in jail. She was released in September of 2008.
In addition, her Olympic medals were taken away from her. She won five medals in the 2000 Olympics, which made her the first woman to earn that many medals in track and field events during one Olympic games. Basketball is not new to Marion Jones. She was the starting point guard for the North Carolina basketball program in 1994. That team went on to win the national championship. She was actually drafted in 2003 by Phoenix, but she never joined the team nor played in the WNBA league.
The 34-year-old participated in workouts last week, and the Shock coach, Nolan Richardson seem to be impressed with what he saw. Even though she is 34 years old, she still has the conditioning and speed of a much younger person. Jones stated that she is looking forward to participating with the team and acknowledges that she is not a normal type of rookie. She has signed a one-year contract, but no one is releasing the terms of that deal as of yet. This will be the first professional sporting team to be located in Tulsa and it is expected with the signing of Marion Jones that she should be able to create the excitement and increase the ticket sales for this newly re-located team from Detroit.
