Nomar Garciaparra Retires
Nomar Garciaparra has officially retired as a Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox signed him to a minor league contract worth $30 in order for him to be able to retire as a Red Sox. Garciaparra stated that it was his goal to be able to retire as a member of the Boston team. During the press conference he also said that he is going to be joining the ESPN broadcast team as a baseball analyst.
Nomar Garciaparra left Boston in the middle of the 2004 season, and he did not really leave on very good terms. He complained about the media and the fans being negative, as well as the amount of pressure that was put on him as a player. He has been considered as one of the best shortstops in the game along with Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriquez. Over the past several years, he has experienced injuries that have kept him from the playing field for teams like LA and Oakland. He was with the Red Sox for nine seasons and has made his mark in the statistics book.
He will leave the game with a career batting average of .313 and has hit 229 home runs. He has 936 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .521. Some other highlights of his career include being a six-time All-Star and winning two consecutive batting titles during the 1999 and 2000 season. He also won the rookie of the year award in 1997 and has been in the top 10 for most valuable player voting five times. Nomar Garciaparra will be able to leave the game with his dream of being a Red Sox realized.
