Indy Racing League Opener

The Indy Racing League started in Sao Paulo, Brazil yesterday. The event was won by Will Power, who races for Team Penske. He won the race by 1.8 seconds, beating out Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport. This is the second victory for Power’s, who won last year in Edmonton. This is his first race that he has been in since he injured his back last year during a race at Infineon Raceway.

The opener of the Indy Racing League experienced a long rain delay with the course being shortened as well. Power’s found himself in second place when the race was restarted. He took the lead with just 3 1/2 minutes left in the race and held on to win. The race started with an accident that took out Marco Andretti during the first lap. The course also had to be altered due to slippery spots, and the qualifying race had to change from Saturday to Sunday due to some of these repairs and the weather.

The Indy Racing League event from Sao Paulo, had Brazilian racer Vitor Meira of A.J. Foyt Racing coming in third place, and it was his first race after also suffering a back injury at Indianapolis last year. Raphael Matos came in fourth and Dan Wheldon finished fifth. Out of the four women that started the race, American Danika Patrick finished 15th and Brazilian Ana Beatriz finished 13th, making her the best female finisher. First place finisher Will Power had an average speed of 76.733 and completed the race in just over two hours.
