Wake Forest Gets OT Win
Wake Forest was able to hold on and get the win in overtime playing the strong Texas team. Texas has struggled throughout the second half of regular season play, even though they had a 17-0 record at the start of the season. They did have a number one ranking, which was their first one in the team’s history. However, in the second half, they lost nine of their last 16 games. The loss to Wake Forest will be the first time that Texas has not been in the tournament since 2005. The game became tied at the end of regular play, and Wake Forest was trailing by eight points within the first few minutes of overtime play. They were able to catch up to Texas by performing a 13 to 4 run against Texas. They got their chance to win the game when Texas was unable to convert two free throws in the last 10 seconds of the game. Ishamael Smith was able come down the court and shoot a jump shot with just 1.9 seconds left. He was able to get the shot and give the Wake Forest team the opportunity to move on in the tournament.
Wake Forest will now meet Kentucky in second round action on Saturday. In other play on Thursday, Murray State got the win over Vanderbilt with a 15-foot jump shot in the last few seconds of play. The other exciting game was the 30-foot shot that gave Northern Iowa its win over UNLV. This made for some extremely exciting basketball for the first day, and included several upsets. Georgetown will not be advancing and neither will Vanderbilt. Notre Dame is out and Villanova was just able to hold on to be able to continue. Friday should also have just as much excitement for all of you March Madness fans.
