A game that surprised Pittsburgh, Xavier University is able to move on to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Xavier was led by Jordan Crawford, who scored 27 points and helped to keep Xavier on top of Pitt. The final score was 71-68 as Pittsburgh has its dreams of moving on squashed. Cornell will also go to the Sweet 16, as they beat Wisconsin with a final score of 87-69. Louis Dale of Cornell scored 26 points in this upset game. Xavier University will now have to play Kansas State on Thursday. The number two seed Kansas State is favored, however, Xavier has been playing extremely well throughout the first two rounds. Other match ups for the sweet 16 will see Syracuse playing Butler and Tennessee going up against number two seed Ohio State. With the many upsets in close games that have occurred so far, the outcome of these games remains uncertain. Northern Iowa upset heavily favored Kansas in the second round, and Michigan State was able to beat Maryland. Northern Iowa has a better season record, but Michigan State is seeded fifth for the NCAA tournament. The remaining teams heading to the Sweet 16 include Kentucky playing Cornell. Kentucky is the overwhelming favorite for this game. Cornell has dominated their first two round games against their opponents and they are now 9 point underdogs to Kentucky. They beat Temple by 13 points, and beat Wisconsin by 18 points. Number one Duke will meet Purdue, and Washington will be played West Virginia. Both Duke and West Virginia are favored and expected to win their Sweet 16 games. St. Mary’s will be playing Baylor, which should be an interesting game as St. Mary’s just upset Villanova. The Sweet 16 games will begin on Thursday, March 25th and will conclude on Friday, March 26th. We will have to wait until then to see how Xavier University fares against Kansas State.
