Female Baseball Player: Eri Yoshida
Female Baseball Player: Eri Yoshida
Eri Yoshida graduated from high school just two weeks ago. She holds several distinct records in baseball already. First of all, she is the first female to be drafted in the Japanese league. Now, she is on the roster for the Chico Outlaws after being spotted playing in the Arizona League last summer. Her claim to fame, a Tim Wakefield-like knuckleball.
Eri Yoshida stated that she had basically taught herself to throw the knuckleball after watching videos of Wakefield. Then, last year during spring training, Eri was fortunate enough to meet Wakefield in person. He took a few minutes to show her how to make her knuckleball completely amazing. She is expected to pitch in an intra-squad game for Chico as early as next week.
Eri Yoshida joins the Chico Outlaws in spring training before opening the regular season in Tijuana. Yoshida isn’t expected to actually pitch in a regular game until late May. That will make Yoshida the first female to play professional baseball in America since Ila Borders in 1997. Yoshida’s work ethic is just one more characteristic that makes her special.
