World Series: Amazing 7 Year Old’s & an Amazing Coach
Today, a large intimidating man was on the baseball diamond with a group of youngsters chasing a dream. One team chasing the dream is also looking to defend a title. The group of kids smiling and happy and full of encouragement from a host of great coaches. Coach Smiga pitches to the players from Sandy Plains in hopes of taking them to another World Series Championship.
In an era when children’s sports have been plagued with the disease of bad coaches and pushy parents, Sandy Plains has had Coach Smiga who teaches the kids the fundamental skills of baseball and he never misses an opportunity to teach the bigger lesson. Each and every trip he made to home plate to move a bat, he hung around long enough to dust off the opposing catcher’s mask before giving it back to him. When the team changed catchers, he took time in between plays to work with the opposing catcher on how to use the gear to block the ball so he wouldn’t get hurt. This team is in the World Series at the age of 7 because they have some really good future athletes, great parents who support them and a host of coaches who know their duties.
Coach Smiga made a point to remind the opposing teams pitcher and catcher to back one another up. Moreover, he even guided the opposing pitcher to the spot that the ball was most likely to go if the catcher missed it. Basically, Coach Smiga did everything but coach both squads on the field. Even in the 7 year old World Series where all the teams are playing for the big trophy, Coach Smiga is extremely genuine and humble both on and off the field.
