Texas Rangers Saved By Nolan Ryan
Texas Rangers Saved By Nolan Ryan
Professional baseball has several faces that are just simultaneous with certain teams. Obviously the Barry Bonds, Cal Ripkin Jr, Ken Griffey, Jr, and Derek Jeter names automatically bring visions of big teams and specific uniforms. Other professional sports operate in much the same manner, hear Michael Jordan’s name and automatically thoughts of the Bulls winning NBA championships will breeze through your mind. When you hear the name Nolan Ryan, visions of the Hall of Fame pitcher working his magic start to dance in your head.
Up until late last night, the ownership of a team which had entered into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in May was unsure exactly who would be labeled as the owner of the Rangers. Many were against the idea of Mavericks owner Mark Cuban seizing control of the Rangers. However, as the auction of the team came to a close, Rangers slugger Michael Young hit a grand slam homer to seal a win over Seattle. Major League Baseball has the final say on the sale of the Rangers but no one in their right mind would turn down Nolan Ryan when it comes to baseball.
Unfortunately for even Ryan and his business partner Chuck Greenberg, purchasing the team also means taking the $200 million in team debt. Moreover, $24.9 million of that is deferred compensation owed to Alex Rodriquez from six years ago. Fans of the Rangers showed up late in the evening and sat for hours on end on courtroom benches awaiting the news. Nolan Ryan was busy being Nolan Ryan during the delays by signing autographs for fans.
