Lebron James Might Return to Cleveland

Posted by Ty Parker

The Miami Heat and LeBron James played in Cleveland the other night, marking yet another inglorious return to the city for James since his infamous Decision to take his talents to South Beach. The Heat got the win, of course, and showed once again why they are well on track to potentially win a championship this season. The Cavaliers are trying to rebuild with young talent, but it’s going to be a long road. And well, leave it to LeBron to stir up some drama and controversy on the subject.

Lebron James Cleveland

While in town to play his old team, LeBron said he wouldn’t rule out returning to Cleveland to play again one day. He said he’d enjoy to do it, and that bygones would be bygones between himself and the team owner, who exchanged plenty of un-pleasantries during the aftermath of the Decision. He said they both made mistakes, but he’d certainly consider rejoining Cleveland, his hometown team, and the team he starred for so superbly at the beginning of his career.

Of course, just because LeBron says he wouldn’t rule it out, it doesn’t mean it will happen. James is all about winning championships, and he still hasn’t brought one home yet. His best chance to win one or several is right where he is in Miami, playing with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, not returning to the Cavaliers and being a one-man team again.

Not only that, but who said the fans of Cleveland would welcome him back? Or that the owner would let bygones be bygones after being spurred by James? The fans and the entire region absolutely adored King James. The best player in the league, a seemingly fun, good guy, and a hometown hero to boot. It was a perfect match for them.

But when James decided to leave, and made the decision as he did on national television in absurdly, overly dramatic fashion, the fans were inconsolable. It wasn’t just sadness, it was anger and fury. LeBron James jerseys were burned, the entire city was cursing him out and wishing him bad luck. It’s not the type of thing that fans are prone to just move beyond.

When he comes back to Cleveland now, he isn’t greeted by grateful cheers like some other stars returning to play former clubs. He’s treated to a loud chorus of boos, and it’s not split amongst the crowd either. Everyone is booing, and not just to get in on the fun, but because they simply dislike him. Dislike might not even be strong enough of a word, maybe loath is more appropriate after what went down and the way it all played out, ensuring that their hearts were torn out and then they were kicked while already on the ground.

So, while James wouldn’t rule out returning to Cleveland, consider that the fans and the owner might make that Decision for him, and decide that no, your talents aren’t welcomed here. Who knows, there could be a day when a 40-year-old James finishes his career with a season or two victory lap for his hometown team. But a still prime James back in Cleveland? No chance. The wounds are still too fresh and painful, and regardless of how James feels, the city still hasn’t moved on, and they won’t be moving on anytime soon.
