Duke Lacrosse

Posted by Mike Jackson

Duke Lacrosse

The Duke lacrosse team has been plagued by a scandal that has lasted since way back in 2006. The team has done well for themselves. For the most part, every player has made it a personal challenge to ensure that the team looks as good off the field as they do on the field. Perception is key to almost every road traveled and the team has done well when forced to choose between the forks in the road.

Now, the Duke lacrosse team can call themselves NCAA Lacrosse champions.  Just a few years past that horrible incident, which managed to linger strictly or legal reasons, and these guys have given it their best shot. Notre Dame was the object of their mission and they managed to pull it off. No one ever dreamed that these youngsters could pull themselves out of such a rut and even get this far.

Notre Dame heads home to mourn the loss of the NCAA Lacrosse championship. But, don’t think for one minute that the mourning will last long. By next week, the players, including the Duke lacrosse team, will all be trying to find a way to beat their next opponent, no matter when it is.  Next week, next month or next year, the will of competition is omnipotent.

College World Series 2010

College World Series 2010

Baseball players from T-ball through high school and college dream of the World Series. And, for many well-determined athletes, the College World Series 2010 could very well be a reality.  And, just like college basketball, the Division 1 teams get a chance to make it to a grand finale. The number one seed going into baseball’s version of the big dance is Arizona State.

Many analyst were expecting to see Texas as the number one seed in round one.  Since Texas is loaded with pitching, they are expected to show up in the College World Series 2010.  However, Arizona is letting the world know that they deserve the luxury of a number one seed. The only problem facing Arizona right now is history.  The number one seed hasn’t won the big prize since 1999.

The College World Series 2010 will get started on June 19th. The teams have to work through a double elimination first round and a best of three series in round two in order to move on. When the games have been played, eight teams will be sitting in the final bracket and headed to Omaha.  Omaha, the place where baseball dreams  come true.

Memorial Day 2010: Gettysburg Address

Posted by Joe Gallo

Memorial Day 2010: Gettysburg Address

Americans celebrate Memorial Day in a less dramatic way than many other holidays. And, even with the holiday being one of the more quietly celebrated, folks definitely enjoy this introduction to summer. One reason to celebrate Memorial Day other than the beginning of summer is the Gettysburg Address. And, if you aren’t familiar with all the information packed into this speech, now is definitely the time to learn.

The Gettysburg Address was given by Abraham Lincoln and is far and away one of the most popular speeches in U.S. history. The speech took place during the Civil War as a dedication to the Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It took Lincoln just a little over two minutes to bring the crowd to excitement. The speech brought about the equality of the Declaration of Independence and as “a new birth of freedom”.

The opening line of the speech is repeated often but usually by people who aren’t even familiar with when or where the words were born. The words “Four Score and seven years ago” are often tossed out when referring to the American Revolution of 1776.  However, many people will toss out the first sentence of the Gettysburg Address just to make themselves seem more educated than they really are.  After all, most folks have no clue what number “four score and 7 years ago” actually represents.

Memorial Day Marathon: Bolder Boulder 2010

Memorial Day Marathon: Bolder Boulder 2010

The Bolder Boulder 2010 marked the 32nd annual celebration. The marathon portion of the fun consists of male and female runners, professionals and amateurs, wheel chair racers and an occasional banana, chicken and crayon. When was the last time you saw a banana running a marathon? Some runners take part for the competition and have nothing but winning on their mind, while others are there for the party.

The festivities include kiddie rides, art shows and of course, the big BolderBoulder 2010 marathon. This year the winner in the men’s division is a 22 year old from Alamosa, Brian Medigovich. The women’s division winner is Cassie Slade, 26, from Highlands Ranch. More often than not, the runners are just there to see if they can finish, winning isn’t part of their goals at all.

A group of middle school students decided to run just for the fun of it.  The run is considered a motivator to get physically fit but also exposes the youngsters to something new. When the final number of runners was tallied, the estimated number comes in at 53,500. The runners leave in 89 separate waves and the end of the race is held at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado where a big Memorial Day celebration continues.

Dario Franchitti: The Indy 500

Dario Franchitti: The Indy 500

The Indy 500 and all the hype have come and gone. A winner crowned and while the winners celebrate, the rest of the cars in the field start planning for next time.  The winner, Dario Franchitti, took advantage of a crash that left the last lap running under a caution flag. He had managed to hang on with barely 1.5 gallons of fuel to cross the finish line.

This win by Dario Franchitti gives his boss Chip Ganassi a new record to hold on to. Chip Ganassi’s car won the Daytona 500 this year and now with Franchitti’s win, he is the first owner to win Indy and NASCAR’s Daytona 500 in the same year. Following Franchitti was England’s Dan Wheldon and Brit Alex Lloyd. Scott Dixon managed to finish next.

So, where was the biggest favorite of the day, Helio Castroneves? Castroneves ran into trouble when his car stalled on pit road on the 146th lap. And, other favorites like Danica Patrick, one of four women racing, managed to finish fifth although she continued to complain about her car.  She never really seemed to find her comfort zone but she still pulled out another top five finish in the last six years.

Rashad vs. Rampage Results: Rashad Evans Takes It Home

Rashad vs. Rampage Results: Rashad Evans Takes It Home

Saturday was filled with prediction of who could and who would pull out victories on the UFC 114 Fight Card.  And, this morning, those who missed out are looking for the Rashad vs. Rampage results.  The main event for the night featured Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans.  The two had done enough ego boosting trash talk that it was impossible to discern who might actually be able to deliver on their promises.

However, when it was all said and done, the fight was fought and the winner was named. Rashad Evans was the one raising his hands in victory over Rampage Jackson. Over the course of the day on Saturday, the experts managed to switch their betting odds from one fighter to the next and back.  But, none of that matters now as the Rashad vs. Rampage results are in and Evans now owns the bragging rights.

Evans made no bones about his strategy from the very beginning. His plan included speed, takedowns and working hard when put in a difficult position. The judges rendered the Rashad vs. Rampage results which gave Evans the win with the scores reading 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27. Evans was able to handle the attack of Jackson and eventually cornered him and landed punch after punch until Jackson really had no chance to win at all.

Indianapolis 500 Race

Indianapolis 500 Race

The Indianapolis 500 Race is close to start time. Various sources say the skies are clear for miles and that the humidity is even tolerable. Chances are as the day progresses, the humidity will rise as will the temperature. And the die-hard fans who started cooking up breakfast early this morning will start cooking themselves in the hot sun.

The Indianapolis 500 Race kicks off at 1 PM but if you are on hand or have ever attended this race, you know that the folks are already taking part in various race fun. The Purdue University band, the bagpipes and the traffic can only mean one thing, it’s almost race time in Indy. If you think this race isn’t big, just take note that NFL great Ozzie Newsome seemed overwhelmed by the magnitude of the race fans arriving so early. When someone accustom to mobs of people following him around recognizes the crowd as enormous, the fact is, the crowd is just that, enormous.

One guy who seems to be handling it all in stride is the Indianapolis 500 Race favorite Helio Castroneves. Castroneves is expected to take home his fourth win at Indy. All the mornings excitement leads to a huge starting event when the call is made, “Ladies and Gentleman, Start your engines”. Probably the most well known phrase in all of racing, maybe in all of sports period.
